Child development by age

Child Development:
Child Development by Age

Supporting your child’s healthy development starts at home.

During the early years of a child’s life, their brain is growing fast. That’s why early childhood is such an important time for learning and development.

What a child does in the first years of life affects how their brain develops. That’s why it’s so important that we make sure that our children spend time with people and in situations that support their healthy development—whether they are at home with us or in child care.

Choosing a licensed, quality child care program is the best way to support your child’s healthy development when they are away from home. No matter your child’s age, you can:
  • Read to your child every day
  • Talk to your child as much as possible about daily routines and activities, their feelings, and what you see
  • Sing songs to your child every day (for example, “Row, Row Row Your Boat,” “Itsy Bitsy Spider,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”)
  • Play with your child every day – get down on their level and follow what they do!

This section has tools to help you learn about child development in different age groups and how to support learning at home for each age group. If you have a concern about your child’s development, talk to your doctor or child care provider. Find other resources for parents at the Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines website.

Are you interested in learning about the expectations for your child's development based on their age? The Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines describe the path of children’s learning and development from birth to 8 years old. Broken down by age and major milestones, the guidelines are a sort of map, helping parents and caregivers navigate their child's early years. Experts from across Colorado developed these guidelines to create a shared understanding and a coordinated approach to learning and development.

Curious about what your little one is thinking at this age? Wondering what you can do to help them thrive and reach their developmental milestones? Check out the guidelines using the link below.
